For folks who live in North Carolina, it’s handy to know that there’s a DMV office in every city, town, and county across The Tar Heel State, ensuring that there’s always a DMV counter near you. Fun fact, there are over 120 N.C. DMV locations throughout the state, and some of them have now accepted walk-in visits, even on Saturdays!

This is a part of the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (DoT) initiative to expedite DMV visits by residents of the state during the intensely busy summer season. Specifically, 16 of the busiest N.C. DMV offices, between June 3rd to August 26th, now offer walk-in services on Saturdays from the hours of 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

TIP: If you’d like more info on each of these N.C. DMV locations, as well as checking their walk-in availability and waiting times, I’d recommend checking out the NCDOT’s website, where the official DMV location/office finder tool can be found. You could browse the map to preview all DMV locations throughout the state, including their respective addresses and contact info.

2) How To Contact The N.C. DMV?

If we’ve missed the contact details on some of these DMV offices or they’re not available, the best way to get in touch with the North Carolina DMV or the Department of Transportation is to contact them directly. Here’s what I’ve found for how you can contact the N.C.’s phone line, though this is best reserved for general inquiries:

  • Phone Number: (919) 715-7000
  • Mailing Address: 1501 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1501
  • Address: 1 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC 27601

Alternatively, you could also try contacting them via the North Carolina DoT and DMV’s official contact form, and they’re also active on social media, so check out their new YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram pages for news, or contacting them that way, instead.

Additionally, I’d also highly suggest taking a look at the NCDOT’s and N.C. DMV’s appointment scheduling system, where you can book appointments up to one week in advance before you intend on visiting. While walk-in visits are accepted at most N.C. DMV locations (especially the 16 locations we mentioned up above), some services require booking an appointment.

We’ll share the specifics of which services can or can’t be done on a walk-in basis down below, but regardless, appointments at any DMV office, including those in North Carolina, might help you skip the long queues and even longer wait times.

3) Other Changes To The N.C. DMV’s Operating Hours

The N.C. DMV has made significant adjustments to its operating hours and walk-in visits to make things easier for folks living in North Carolina. For example, since May 1st, 2023, they’ve made it so that services are available for walk-ins from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM on weekdays, all to ensure greater availability for walk-in visitors and help manage the usually long wait times.

Additionally, the N.C. DMV even made it so that some locations have extended their operating hours, and now open an hour earlier than usual, at 7:00 AM. Altogether, it should allow more folks like you and me more flexibility in planning a trip down to the local DMV office, and you won’t have to be stuck behind a long queue for hours at a time.

4) Services Provided On A Walk-In Basis

Nevertheless, despite offering more available and flexible time slots for walk-ins, ensure that you check which specific services are available on a walk-in basis, or if you’d need to schedule an appointment beforehand.

For context, here are some services that are available for walk-ins:

  • Renewing driver’s licenses and state ID cards.
  • Replacing or duplicating driver’s licenses and state ID cards (i.e. if you lost the original, or if it was damaged).
  • Updating and changing your home address on a driver’s license or state ID card.
  • Obtaining and issuing a REAL ID.
  • Taking the road test (for folks who’ve already passed the knowledge and written test prior).
  • Handling basic vehicle registration-related services.

Otherwise, here are some of the other services that require an appointment:

  • Issuing a driver’s license or state ID card for the first time.
  • Out-of-state vehicle registration transfers or handling salvage titles.
  • Handling applications for CDL (Commercial Driver’s Licenses) or renewals.
