New York Driver Permit

Everyone would love to drive a car, but not everyone gets to. This is because driving is a privilege and not a matter of right in strict legal terms.  Every state in the US has a system of checks and balances in place to ensure that only those individuals who prove they can handle the responsibility of the road are allowed to drive a vehicle. This is why states offer a driving permit to children who turn 16, as a means of easing them into a license.

Obtaining a New York driving permit is necessary if you want to drive a car anywhere in the state. In order to be eligible for the permit, you must be at least 16 years of age, with a consenting parent or legal guardian to sign off on your application. An exemption to this is individuals who are 17 years old and have a completed driver’s education certificate.

Applying for a New York driving permit requires you to have a valid Social Security Number, proof of identity, a completed application form, and some cash to pay the processing fees. This is only the first stage of the process though. After you have submitted your paperwork, you will be tested on your knowledge of the driver’s manual of the state, to determine your understanding of the laws and rules of the road. It is recommended that you prepare for the test in advance by going through the driver’s manual on your own. Additionally, your eyesight will also be tested to ensure you can legally drive a car.

Upon passing the test, you’ll be awarded a driver’s permit. But there are several stipulations which you must follow closely, if you want to hold on to your driving privileges and qualify for a senior license. For instance, you will not be allowed to drive alone between the hours of 9pm and 5am, and you will always need to have an adult who is at least 21 years of age to supervise you every time you drive as well. All of these measures are in place to ensure your safety as a new driver. Following them for 6 months will make you eligible for a senior license.
