DMV License Renewal in New York

Driving with an expired license in New York can get you a ticket. To avoid the inconvenience that comes with that, it is a good idea to have your driving license renewed timely. To be eligible for renewal you must hold a valid driving license from the state of New York.

New York Driving License Renewal Facts
You may apply for a license renewal up to a year before the expiry date on it. You can also have it renewed within two years after it has expired. This, however, does not mean that you will not receive a ticket for driving with an expired license during these two years. The fees or the expiration date on your documents is not affected in any way if you choose to apply for renewal earlier or later than the expiration date. Also, if you choose to have your license renewed forty days or less before your twenty first birthday, the ‘UNDER 20’ logo will also be removed from it.

How to Renew Your Driving License in New York
Renewing your license in New York is not a difficult job. You can complete the entire procedure online on the New York state website for the DMV. License Renewal in New York cannot, however, be carried out online if it is a learner permit, a restricted license, reads ‘Valid without photo’ or has an ignition interlock restriction. You may also not renew a regular license online if you want it to be converted into an Enhanced Driver License (EDL) after renewal. All such licenses may be renewed by sending in an application through mail or visiting a DMV office in person.

Renewing your license also requires you to fill in information from the eye test report (Form: MV-619) in the form. You should also give the NY DMV office at least two weeks to process your request and send the renewed license to you. Also, once made, an online transaction cannot be canceled and neither can you obtain a refund. You will also need a valid email address where you can receive confirmation of your transaction from DMV.
