You can get your Georgia driving license renewed if you have a license which hasn’t been expired for more than two years or if it about to expire in 150 days.
The Department of Driver Services (DDS) began issuing Secure ID Driver’s Licenses in accordance with the Real ID Act in July 2012. For this reason, if you are going through the Georgia license renewal procedure for the first time, you need to go down to the local DDS office in person. You need to take along with you documents which can prove your identity, social security number and Georgia residency. Also take along latest photographs to be attached on the form and the change of name documents, if required. You will be required to submit the driver license renewal fee.
However, if you meet the requirements, you can go for the online Georgia license renewal process. For this, you should have a driver’s license which is a Secure ID compliant license which has a gold star in the upper right corner; you should be 64 years old or younger, a resident of Georgia, a U.S. citizen, have a valid social security number, a current driving license and a valid credit card for payments. You can then simply go online, follow the instructions, fill in all required information, make the payment and wait till you receive your renewed license within 7-10 days.
If say, you are resident of Georgia but are temporarily residing outside of the state, you could renew through mail. This works for full-time college students or active military personnel including their spouse and children. For this, you should write an application stating your citizenship with full signature, the number of your Georgia driving license, social security number, current out-of-state address and your Georgia permanent address. If you are a student, you need to attach a letter stating that you are currently enrolled as a full-time student from the registrar’s office on the college letterhead. If you are in the military, get your commanding officer to write a confirmation letter on the military letterhead, proving that you are currently on active duty and living outside of Georgia.
