For teen drivers, it is important to spend adequate time practicing their skills before applying for a formal license to drive independently. Driving is a privilege, and you must demonstrate your command over the law and your vehicle in order to be allowed to drive. Drivers Education in Michigan is divided into two segments for teenagers in order to facilitate the transition from practice to real life. All high schools in Michigan offer this course for students to take.
In the first segment, you are required to take a minimum of 24 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of practice behind the wheel. In this segment, the emphasis is more on developing a theoretical understanding of the rules of the road and only a minor focus is placed on actual driving itself. Through this segment though, you will become familiar with Michigan state laws, enhance some basic map reading skills and how to maintain vehicle safety.
At the end of the course, you will take a multiple choice test to prove your learning and understanding, after which you will be authorized to approach the Secretary of State’s office to apply for a Level 1 Learner’s License. You will also need valid identification and pass a basic health and vision screening test.
With your Level 1 License, you can drive with certain restrictions. You will need an adult to accompany you, for instance, and you can only drive within certain hours. Upon completing 30 hours of driving under various conditions, you are qualified to take the second part of the Drivers Education in Michigan course. Now the emphasis is on preparing you for the road. You will spend 50 hours driving under various conditions, before you can apply for the road skills test and obtain a Level 2 License, which grants more independence to the driver.
